Valsartan Recall Lawsuit

Valsartan Recall Lawsuit

Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with cancer, liver damage, or other serious illnesses after taking the blood pressure/heart medication valsartan? If so, you may be entitled to compensation from the companies that sold this dangerously tainted medication.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled a large number of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) ─ including valsartan, losartan, and irbesartan ─ after determining they contain nitrosamine impurities that can lead to life-threatening conditions. Now, injured patients are filing valsartan recall lawsuits to demand justice for the harm they have suffered.

Serious Injury Law Group is now accepting clients who have been affected by the valsartan recall. What Happened to Cause the Valsartan Lawsuits?

Valsartan and other ARB medications are used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. In the summer of 2018, the FDA warned that some versions of valsartan and other ARB medications contain nitrosamine impurities such as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), and N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA). These are all considered probable or potential human carcinogens, meaning they can cause cancer.

Nitrosamines are environmental contaminants that can sometimes be found in water and food such as meats, dairy products, and vegetables. However, the FDA determined that the impurities detected in valsartan medications may have been caused during the manufacturing process.

“Any presence of such impurities in drug products is not acceptable,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, has said of the discovery of the contaminants in valsartan.

Valsartan Cancer and Dangerous Side Effects

Exposure to nitrosamine impurities such as NDMA, NDEA, and NMBA can lead to a broad range of life-threatening illnesses, including but not limited to:

  • Liver cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Intestinal or colon cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Severe liver or kidney damage

Additional adverse side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Enlarged liver
  • Reduced function of liver, kidneys, and lungs
  • Low platelet counts

If you or a family member has been taking valsartan and have since been diagnosed with cancer or another serious health condition, please do not hesitate to learn about your legal rights. You may be entitled to compensation for your related medical expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, and future anticipated expenses.

What Medications Have Been Recalled?

Many manufacturers have recalled valsartan medications in a broad range of dosages, from 40 mg to 320 mg. Some manufacturers are also recalling certain medications that contain amlodipine and valsartan or losartan, as well as some medications that contain hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and valsartan or losartan. (Medicines that contain only amlodipine or hydrochlorothiazide are not subject to the recall.)

Companies that are included on the FDA’s valsartan recall list include:

  • A-S Medication Solutions LLC
  • American Health Packaging
  • Aurobindo Pharma USA Inc.
  • AvKare
  • Bryant Ranch Prepack Inc.

It is important to know that not all valsartan medications are being recalled. The FDA keeps a detailed list of the recalled versions of the medication, including manufacturer, dosage, and lot number. Review the FDA recall list to find out if your medication has been recalled.

What Should You Do If You Are Taking Valsartan?

If you or a loved one is taking valsartan for your blood pressure or heart, you should continue to take your medicine until you talk to your doctor or pharmacist about alternative treatments. Keep in mind that not all lots of valsartan are being recalled, so it is best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes.

To look up whether your medication has been recalled in the FDA database, you will need to know:

  • Manufacturer or labeler name
  • National Drug Code (NDC)
  • Lot number
  • Active ingredient(s)

If you are experiencing any unexpected side effects from taking valsartan or another ARB medicine, please report this to the FDA’s MedWatch program. Then, contact a knowledgeable attorney at Serious Injury Law Group to discuss your legal rights.
